In their most recent game, Yeovil Whirlwinds welcomed Truro Blue Jays to Bradford Abbas, their first visit to the Somerset side’s home ground and both teams’ first double header of the season.
Without a number of regular first team starters, Yeovil welcomed into their lineup one debutant and a couple of returning players making their first appearance this season.
A sluggish start to game one for the Whirlwinds saw them fall behind early, helped by a grand slam home run scored by the Cornish side’s starting pitcher. The home team gradually got into the game over the following few innings, clawing back some of the deficit, pulling themselves to within 5 runs ahead of the final inning.
Needing to score at least those 5 runs to make the visiting side bat again, a great batting inning from the Whirlwinds produced an impressive 8 runs. This included a clutch hit by debutant Kris Csicso, his first ever hit which was enough to earn him the vote for Play of the Day.
Sadly Yeovil could not defend their 3 run lead with Truro patiently waiting out the inning and scoring the 4 runs required to take victory. Final score, Yeovil 20 Truro 21.
The upturn in the Whirlwinds offence continued into the early part of the second game. Starting much more brightly, they pulling into a 7 runs to 3 lead after the first two innings. However at this point the exertions of the day started to tell for the home side with a number of key players unfortunately suffering injuries in quick succession.
With the rug pulled out from under them, Yeovil struggled to keep up with their opponents who’s tails were still up after their success in game one. Five runs scored in each of the last three Truro innings (including a further home run from the visitors’ pitcher) proved decisive, creating a lead Yeovil could not pull back. The Blue Jays ran out winners in game two 21 runs to 15.
After some good recent performances, these two games felt a step below what the Whirlwinds were capable of. They will look to bounce back as they travel to the league leading Exeter Spitfires in their next game this Sunday.
