Yeovil Whirlwinds took the lengthy trip down to Devon this weekend to face last season’s finalists, Newton Brewers.
Despite the predicted bad weather the game was able to go ahead. Facing somewhat of an injury crisis and with several players unavailable Yeovil took a skeleton squad down to Devon. Yeovil batted the first innings and despite some good hits from Dave, Raimund and Jack they were unable to score, Newton pulling off some remarkable plays in the field to keep Yeovil scoreless. Having only come to his first training session with Yeovil on Tuesday, Jack Amphlett was thrown in the deep end and tasked with pitching for Yeovil, a stellar effort from Jack was not enough to keep Newton at bay and they stacked up the runs. Yeovil offered their usual stubborn resistance with Rich, Jess, Glen and Chrisi getting some good hits in and Jaidon, Simon, Dave and Chrisi making some pretty impressive plays in the field. In the third Innings Jack pitched a perfect 1-2-3 innings where no batter made it to base, taking a couple of strikeouts along the way, fantastic effort for a debut. Despite these efforts Newton managed to take the lead, going into the 5th innings the lead was 15-5. Dave Martin was brought in to pitch the remainder of the game, another pitching debutant for Yeovil. Some fabulous pitching from Dave was not enough to quell Newton and they continued their ruthlessness with the bat, Yeovil were unable to score in reply.
Chrisi took a spectacular catch in the outfield which was later voted “play of the day” by her teammates and was met with cheers from just about everyone on the field, including Newton’s players and the umpire, well done Chrisi. The final score was 23-5 to the Newton Brewers, the game was played with a lovely friendly atmosphere and they were amazing hosts as always. Yeovil look forward to welcoming them to our home field in Bradford Abbas on 10th July.
Despite another loss for the Whirlwinds, it really feels like a win is just around the corner and there are positives to be drawn from every game now. Yeovil Whirlwinds return to training on Tuesday evening at 6:45pm at Bradford Abbas sports and recreation club, all are welcome. Whirlwinds’ next game is a double header against Exeter Spitfires on Sunday 12th June, first pitch is at 11am.
