Another Sunday and another game of baseball. Following on from Yeovil Whirlwinds’ loss to Plymouth Mariners on 8th May, Whirlwinds hosted the Wellington Khaki Sox who themselves had suffered defeat last time out.
Last season the teams met 3 times, all three of which were tightly fought games, but Yeovil ran out victorious on all three occasions.
Wellington, keen to make amends, flew into an early lead, scoring a maximum of 5 runs in their first innings, Whirlwinds could only muster one run in reply. A quiet second innings followed, excellent efforts in the field from both teams ensured that the second innings remained scoreless. The third innings however was a different story, a really strong batting display from Wellington saw them score another maximum 5 runs, a decent innings at bat from Yeovil saw the Whirlwinds score three in reply to keep the game competitive.
Despite glimmers that Yeovil may be able to mount a comeback with good performances in the field and at bat, Wellington had gained the ascendency and were able to pile on the runs, dogged work in the field and on the pitcher’s mound from Yeovil was not enough and Wellington capitalised and took control of the game, scoring the maximum 5 runs in the 3rd, 5th and 6th innings Whirlwinds did manage to mount a small fight back in the 6th innings with Toby Richards hitting a spectacular grand slam, managing to bring home 4 runs, after the game this was voted “Play of the day” by Toby’s Yeovil team mates. Yeovil’s efforts, however, were to no avail as Wellington ran out well deserved winners taking the game 21-8.
The game was played in high spirits throughout and had a friendly atmosphere, Wellington were fantastic opponents as always and were humble in victory. Whirlwinds look forward to facing Wellington again in July. A disappointing result for Yeovil, but one from which some positives can be taken, young Jaidon Hauptfleisch made his debut and Courtney Crocco made her pitching debut for the club. Special mention also for Rich Birch who umpired his first game and did a cracking job. Yeovil Whirlwinds return to training Tuesday evening at 6:45pm at Bradford Abbas Sports and Recreation Club all are welcome, regardless of ability or gender.
Yeovil Whirlwinds next game is away to Newton Brewers at Stover School, Sunday 29th May, first pitch is at noon, all are welcome to come along and watch.
