Plymouth Mariners @ Yeovil Whirlwinds

This week Yeovil Whirlwinds faced a visit from last season’s champions the Plymouth Mariners.

On what was an overcast day on which rain threatened to call a halt to play, both teams took to the field eager to get cracking.

Jack Amphlett took the mound to pitch for Yeovil in the game, Plymouth batted first and came out with some powerful and disciplined batting. Yeovil did manage to restrict the Mariners to 3 runs from their opening innings at bat, in reply Yeovil mustered just the one run.

More of the same from the experienced Mariners in their second innings saw them score another 5 runs and shut Yeovil out completely. Unfortunately for Yeovil this was the case in the 3rd and 4th Innings too, maximum runs for Plymouth and, despite a battling performance with the bat from Yeovil, they were unable to score.

Into the 5th innings the score was 18-1 to Plymouth, the game seemingly won, Plymouth swung a little more freely with the bat and Yeovil were able to restrict the Mariners to just 2 runs from the final 2 innings by taking their chances in the field when the ball was popped up. Glen Banks took two impressive catches in quick succession at second base, this was later voted play of the day by his Yeovil team mates, good work Glen!

It must be said, Plymouth’s pitching was excellent; quick, disciplined and above all really difficult to hit, a great learning experience for a relatively inexperienced Yeovil team.

As always, we enjoyed hosting Plymouth, this will likely be the final time the two teams will meet this season, but we look forward to playing again in 2023.

Yeovil Whirlwinds return to training Tuesday evening at 6:45pm at Bradford Abbas sports and recreation club, all are welcome. We only have two games remaining this season, Whirlwinds next game is at home against Wellington Khaki Sox, Sunday 14th August, first pitch is at 12.
